The Popularity of Cell Phones in the U.S.

Nearly everyone in the U.S. owns a cell phone. For instance, four in every five teens in the U.S. has a cell phone. Quite frankly, cell phones have a huge impact on the American society today. For most teens, cell phones come second after clothes, in telling about their popularity or social status. A huge number of teenagers regard the cell phone as playing a major role in their social life. The majority of teens also agree that the cell phone has now become a new kind of entertainment source and more than a third of teens play games on their mobile device.

Similarly, when it comes to adults, a study showed that over half the cell phone owners in the U.S. use their phone at least once each month to regain quick information. This could be a variety of things from accessing the internet to ask a question, launching an application to help you find a restaurant or using your maps in order to find directions. Over half the number of adults in the U.S. own smartphones. The most popular cell phone uses are texting and picture taking, with about seventy percent of Americans using their phones for both purposes.

Teens in the U.S. like to text even more than talking and cite various reasons for this preference. Among them is that texting provides more options such as speed, multitasking, avoiding verbal communication and it is fun as well. Research shows that if texting was no longer a feature of the cell phone, nearly a half of the teens said their social life would be affected and that is especially so among teen females. Teens admit that having a cell phone makes them feel secure and confident since they can find their family and friends or help someone in trouble.

In the American society, phones play a role that is deeply rooted in all aspects of life. For instance, a recent study showed that about thirteen percent of Americans admit that they have, in one time or another, used their cell phone to avoid a social interaction. Some are even dependent on their cell phone. About a quarter of the population has experienced a situation in which they had trouble doing something because they didn’t have their cell phone.
